“These demons,” he said, “were very strong. They abused people sexually. Sometimes they were said to impregnate women. Do you see how strong these fantasies were?”

“I’m not stupid, Doctor.”

“So why did they see these things? Because they were a way of expressing something that frightened them.”

Carlotta looked at Sneidermann with a perplexed, mocking expression. She waited for him to continue, and when he did not, she became flustered.

“This means nothing to me, Dr. Sneidermann.”

“Well, let’s say a man—a man who wanted to be good—he had a desire for a neighbor’s wife. It gets worse and worse. He finally invents this creature—she has a hooked nose, warts, and an evil temper. Of course, it’s a picture of his own desire, which is hideous to himself. You see what I mean?”

“No.”

“All right. Let’s get back into the present. My supervisor had a case once in which a woman developed a loathing for the smell of paint. It made her so ill she had to lie in bed, immobilized. Why? Because she had found out about a case of incest. In her own home. Her husband had had intercourse with their daughter. Do you understand, Carlotta? It had happened while the house was being remodeled. Now everything was blocked out except the memory of the paint. It became the symbol for what she had blocked out.”

Carlotta laughed nervously.
